Overhaul of West Midlands Fire Station Improves Building Efficiency and Protects Services for Local Community
Bilston Fire Station has been protecting the local community for over half a century. However in recent years the building had started to show its age, in particular the roof structures, which have seen increasing stress through the application of roof lights and other services essential to the operation of the fire service. Attempts to repair the existing waterproofing system had clearly been made however, water ingress was still a common occurance. Garland were approached to provide a complete solution to ensure that the building remained watertight for years to come. The Garland Technical Manager conducted a thorough survey of each roof section and complied a full program of works based on his findings.
By taking several core samples of each roof section, it was apparent that the existing insulation was well below current regulations which have become increasingly demanding in order to improve building efficiency. Other findings from the survey included several areas prone to ponding water which accelerated the aging of waterproofing membranes. Another cause of this was due to the insufficient gutter systems which were liable to blockages.
Our proposed solution was to strip back the existing roofing systems to the deck and install Garland’s StressPly Evolution system with a life expectancy of over 30 years. In addition, a new tapered insulation drainage scheme allowed for improved gutter efficiency and prevent any potential for standing water. To finish the external look a new GRP trim was installed providing a clean finish and improved aesthetic to the building.
The project was delivered on budget and on schedule, in part due to the regular site visits and detailed reports from the Technical Manager. This service combined with the expert workmanship of the Garland approved contractor provided the building manager with confidence that the roof would deliver for the guaranteed lifespan of 20 years.
Another successful partnership between client, contractor and full-service manufacturer.
