The Garland Company UK completed a fantastic renovation project located in East Lothian, Scotland in December 2016 using our StressPly Evolution modified bitumen system . Garland helped the client replace an out-dated system that was in need of an upgrade.

The Challenge

The schools roof was originally installed in excess of 30 years ago and had greatly exceeded it's life expectancy and was in dire need of an upgrade. Once a full roof survey and core samples were carried out by Garland it was found that the roof build up consisted of an old vapour control layer, 80mm cork insulation and a mineral felt cap sheet. It was also found that the insulation beneath the waterproofing was saturated which meant that the roof had failed and the building was performing at much lower thermal values. As the insulation was wet, there was only one solution, and that was to strip the existing roof build up back to the original timber deck. Due to the requirements of the client, as there was going to be a great deal of foot traffic on some areas of the roof for servicing any air handling equipment, the specified product had to be robust to allow for these needs as well as performing as an exceptional waterproofing membrane while being suited to the available budget. The product of choice for this project was StressPly® Evolution.

The Solution

The StressPly Evolution system is one of many multiple-layer modified bitumen systems in Garland's product portfolio. During the initial part of this project, the roof was stripped in stages to ensure that the building was kept water tight at all times. Garland's metal lined vapour barrier was then installed with brand new PIR insulation followed by the StressPly Evolution system. As there were numerous roof-lights previously installed onto the roof, the decision was made to board up and cover some, and replace the rest with new poly-carbonate domes. As there were numerous sections of the roof that originally had air handling units installed, these were safely removed and installed in conjunction to the installation stages that the roofing work was carried out. Upon the completion of the project, the client was greatly pleased with the new roof system and has additional partnerships with Garland coming in the near future. Another great partnership between client, contractor and full-service manufacture.
